Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has taken a subtle swipe at Arsenal.
Arsenal went top of the Premier League table last night following a 1-0 win against Brentford.
It was a struggle for the Gunners to get all three points against their London rivals. Brentford frustrated Mikel Arteta’s side, and came close to scoring a couple of times themselves. It took until the 89th minute for Arsenal to force a breakthrough, when Kai Havertz got on the end of a Bukayo Saka cross to nod home.
Overall, Arteta will be delighted that his side found a way to get the job done in trying circumstances.
This has been the case on several occasions already this season, when Arsenal have managed to grind out positive results without being at their fluent best on the pitch. Even club legend David Seaman has expressed his surprise at how many points Arsenal have been able to pick up.
Gary Neville has previously highlighted this habit as a positive for the Gunners, as it leaves them well-placed to grow into the campaign and hit top form at the perfect time, towards the end of the season.
However, the pundit has now aimed a sly dig at the north London club. Taking to X after the win over Brentford, the former full-back said, “Arsenal are in a good place. Not at their best so the hype isn’t big, but they’re solid and getting the job done. Perfect for a team looking to win a title that haven’t before.”
Arsenal looking to create new era of success
Arsenal have, of course, won the title before. They have claimed the top flight title on thirteen previous occasions, with three of those successes coming in the Premier League era.
In 2002, the Gunners were even able to clinch to the trophy with a win against Manchester United at Old Trafford, during Neville’s own playing days.
However, it is true to say that none of the current crop of Arsenal first team players and coaching staff have been part of a title triumph with the club. They came close last season, before falling short in the final stretch. The aim will clearly be to go one step better this time around.
Arteta is still relatively early on in his career as a manager, with the Arsenal job, which he has held since December 2019, being his first appointment in such a role. He has also built a young squad at the Emirates Stadium.
The likes of Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Martin Odegaard, and Declan Rice, amongst others, are all under 25 years of age. The experience they gained last season, in going toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the title race, ought to help them this time around.
