Injuries have swept through Tottenham Hotspur from top to bottom in the last few weeks with Ange Postecoglou’s side down to its bare bones following the November international break.
While the likes of James Maddison, Micky Van de Ven and Rodrigo Bentancur are all set for extended spells on the sidelines, Spurs’ youth sides are similarly feeling the impact of some big absentees as two of their key young players have been ruled out.
Tottenham News‘ exclusive columnist John Wenham shared a double update on his Twitter account, Lilywhite Rose (27 November) detailing the extent of injuries to Spurs youngsters George Abbott and Mikey Moore.
Abbot is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines with an injury that has been described as a “massive blow” with the England youth international viewed as a very bright prospect at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 18-year-old made his first-team debut at the end of last season in a short cameo in the final minutes from the bench in Spurs’ 4-1 win over Leeds United and has previously been named among the subs for a defeat to Bournemouth.
Moore is also likely to miss six weeks of action having picked up a calf injury whilst away on international duty during the November break. The 16-year-old attacker has been a key member of the Spurs youth side in the early stages of the season, scoring eight goals in seven under-18 Premier League appearances.
This comes as a huge blow to the Tottenham academy as they prepare for their FA Youth Cup clash, with their third-round tie set to be played on Tuesday 5 December, with Spurs set to face Brentford away from home.
While neither player was likely to feature for the first team in the coming weeks, even with the mass injury crisis being felt throughout Postecoglou’s ranks, it is yet another injury blow to Tottenham as their fitness hell continues.
Both players would have been key for the academy sides in the coming weeks, especially in the run-up to Christmas and who knows, had a few more players dropped out of the first team, Tottenham may have had nowhere else to look than their academy.
Hopefully, Spurs can still navigate their way through the FA Youth Cup third-round and both Abbott and Moore can match or better their estimated return dates so Spurs don’t miss the pair for 12 weeks collectively.
