On another day, the Gunners could have scored four or five, with Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard all spurning golden opportunities before Wolves made it a tense finish late on.

Matheus Cunha capitalised on an Oleksandr Zinchenko error, with the Ukraine international losing the ball cheaply deep in Arsenal’s half. Cunha then curled his shot past a helpless David Raya, but Mikel Arteta’s men were able to hold on to clinch all three points in the end.

After the full-time whistle, Zinchenko took to social media, breaking his silence on his mistake. Writing in an Instagram post, the experienced left-back said: “3 points (tick emoji).

“Accept. Learn. Move on. Next action. (Hands raised emoji).”

Gunners boss Arteta played down the 26-year-old’s error post-match, hailing his on-ball qualities during his press conference. “You have to love him, how he is,” the Spaniard said when he was asked about Zinchenko’s error.

“Every player has strengths and weaknesses. Alex has many more strengths.

“This happened and it can happen to any player. We have to learn from it because there are certain areas where it’s a big no to play, especially after certain things in the previous phase.

“That’s it. We will get better.”
