Alan Hutton was impressed by Ange Postecoglou refusing to change his philosophy against Manchester City but fears Tottenham have a habit of overplaying.
Spurs earned a point in a dramatic 3-3 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday (3 December) in a classic Premier League encounter that ended a run of three straight defeats for Tottenham.
The visitors were guilty of a couple of nervy moments defensively, though, as a makeshift defence – that once again saw Emerson Royal partner Ben Davies at centre-back – came under intense pressure.
Former Spurs defender Hutton praised Postecoglou but did concede he is worried by the mistakes made by Spurs on the ball.
Speaking to Tottenham News, Hutton said: “It just shows you he’s (Postecoglou) not going to change.
“This is one of the biggest tests you’re going to have going to the Etihad and playing Manchester City, so for him not to change, and again the injuries he’s got and had to come over, he’s got a philosophy and he’s going to stick to it.
“That being said, I do think at half-time he realised they were a little bit open, obviously Bryan Gil comes off, (Pierre-Emile) Hojbjerg comes on and they seem a little bit more defensive but they’re still going for it, still out-and-out attack.
“The only thing that worries me I guess is they do overplay at times, you see the one with (Erling) Haaland’s miss, obviously he should score, they’re overplaying out of the wide area, (Yves) Bissouma gives the ball away to Rodri in a dangerous area there and they up scoring – (Jack) Grealish scores a goal.
“For a neutral, unbelievable game of football to watch it’s just that’s what you want to see. And fair play to Ange he sticks to his guns.”
Spurs are fifth in the Premier League after 14 matches following the draw against City, six points adrift of leaders and rivals Arsenal.
West Ham make the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (7 December), with Newcastle visiting three days later.
