Manchester United could have problems signing Tottenham Hotspur loanee Sergio Reguilon permanently, as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano exclusively told GIVEMESPORT why a long-term deal at Old Trafford is “complicated”.
Although the Spaniard was among the fresh faces to join the Red Devils, with boss Erik ten Hag spending almost £175m on reinforcements in the summer transfer window, doubts are being raised as to whether he will remain on the club’s books for much longer.
Last week, Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich was the worst campaign in Champions League history, picking up just four points from six games, and relegation came just days before the team was refreshed.
Reguilon is wanted by European heavyweights
According to Sky Sports German reporter Patrick Berger, Reguilon is Borussia Dortmund’s main target ahead of the transfer window reopening and Manchester United could help with the transfer.
The respected journalist speculates that there is a break clause in the temporary deal that brought the left-sided defender to Old Trafford a few hours before the summer transfer deadline, and the Bundesliga giants have enquired about a six-month loan.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has reportedly already tried to approach Reguilon to lure him to Signal Iduna Park midway through the campaign, but he faces competition from another European heavyweight.
The Spaniard has been identified as a potential buyer by Serie A side Roma. Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has sanctioned a January transfer as he looks for a replacement for Leonardo Spinazzola.
Although ten Hag confirmed that there is a termination clause in Reguilon’s loan deal, he admitted that a final decision on whether to keep him as one of his options has not yet been made and that talks will have to be held with parent club Tottenham.
While transfer dealmaker Dean Jones recently told GIVEMESPORT that Manchester United are unlikely to attempt to turn the 27-year-old’s loan move into a permanent move, he insisted that there is still time for him to prove why he deserves a long-term deal at Old Trafford.

Romano believes that signing Reguilon on a permanent deal will not be an easy task, as Luke Shaw is ahead of him in the Manchester United pecking order and the loan player’s high wage could prove too high.
However, the Italian journalist understands that ten Hag is happy with how the full-back, who cost Tottenham up to £32m when he arrived from Real Madrid in September 2020, has performed during the testing period of the campaign.
Romano told GIVEMESPORT: “At the moment, the vast majority of the players have come together at the club:
“To be honest, I don’t think it will be easy because buying Reguilon permanently from Tottenham when you have Luke Shaw and the possibility of having other players there is probably complicated.
“I’m not sure they’ll keep him beyond the end of his loan deal, but they are happy with what Sergio Reguilon is doing.
“He helped a lot in the first part of the season and he’s getting a big wage. At the moment it’s not something Manchester United are doing or negotiating, so we’ll see.”

According to reports, the England international has been selected as a potential replacement for Emil Forsberg, who joined Major League Soccer’s sister club New York Red Bulls as a Designated Player in the Bundesliga.
Sancho has been very successful in the German Championship during his time with Dortmund, scoring 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 appearances, but he could have other options as he looks to take on a new challenge in the middle of the campaign.
Manchester United’s director of football John Murtough has flown to the Middle East to hold talks with Saudi Professional League representatives about the availability of the winger – along with Raphael Varane, Anthony Martial and Casemiro – as the Hague look to raise funds for reinforcements.
The Red Devils are also considering whether to include Sancho in a high-profile swap deal that would see him head to Barcelona in exchange for Raphinho, who has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford.
