Paul Robinson believes that Hugo Lloris’ career at Tottenham should not end, as the Frenchman is currently “fading into the background”.
According to the BBC Sport pundit, it is even possible that the 37-year-old could have his contract terminated so that he could move elsewhere and play, as he has not made a single appearance for the club this season after not being included in the pre-season tour and losing his captain’s armband.
Robinson admits that new star Guglielmo Vicario has been “outstanding” since his summer arrival, but would like to see the 444-time World Cup winner get a better send-off after years of service, although he has not ruled out an imminent departure.
Speaking to Tottenham News, he said: ‘There could be an agreement between the club and the player to cancel the contract and allow him to move on to pastures new.
“For me personally it would be disappointing if he left the club in this way because he has been a fantastic servant to the club.
“Father time catches up with everything and a manager comes into the club, your face doesn’t fit or whatever, and your lifetime comes to an end.
“That seems to be what happened to Hugo. He’s been susceptible to a few mistakes in the last two or three seasons.
“But Vicario came in and took the gloves, he was outstanding.
“So, Hugo’s time at Tottenham as number one seems to be over. In terms of how he’s going to leave the club, I think he deserves a lot more than that, he’s kind of faded into the background at the moment.
“I’m not saying I’d like to see him in a Spurs jersey again, I’m saying he’d like to say goodbye somehow and leave the club in a good way.
“When he does return in the future, whether as a player, coach or spectator, I’m sure he will be welcomed back with open arms and with very fond memories of the servant he was for the club.”
