Tottenham have reportedly told Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg that they can look for new clubs in the January window.
Spurs, under the leadership of Anže Postecoglou, have awakened a number of new players to cover most positions.
This has meant that some players who were important in the previous regime no longer have the same status. Football Insider reports that three players – Dier, Lloris and Hojbjerg – were given notice in January that they could look for new clubs.
The signings of Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario make the former duo no longer needed, while Dier has only played because of an injury to his successor; Lloris has not played a minute since last season.
Hojbjerg played a more important role than his two teammates, missing only one league game. However, he has only made three appearances since the start of the match.
As such, he will be able to find a new home before his contract, which expires in 2025, reaches the point where the Spurs can no longer make money from him.
Hojbjerg is believed to be valued at £20 million by the North London club. Recently, Ajax, Barcelona and Juventus have also been linked with him.
It would therefore not be a surprise if any of these sides would be willing to pay £20 million for the 28-year-old.
Dier and Lloris will apparently be able to leave without payment. Their contracts expire in 2024, so they will be able to negotiate transfers to third division clubs in January.
Tottenham will lose a lot of experience in their squad, but the key point is that neither of the duo has played a major role at all since Postecoglou’s arrival.
Once he gets rid of the wages, the boss can concentrate on finding players who fit the philosophy he wants to instil in the squad. It is not clear where Dier or Lloris could end up, but given their experience at Tottenham, there will certainly be interest.
