Fabrizio Romano claims that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.
Spurs are expected to be active in the winter transfer window as many of their key players are injured. All eyes will be on the arrivals, but a few players could also leave Tottenham. Hugo Lloris is on the verge of leaving and Hojbjerg could now follow him through the door.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was always one of the first names on the list when Tottenham were managed by Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
The Swede has been a reliable player for Spurs over the years. He has also made his fair share of mistakes, but some of his performances at the start of his career in North London were fantastic.
However, Hojbjerg is no longer Tottenham’s first choice. Ange Postecoglou doesn’t want him and even young Pape Matar Sarr is ahead of him.
That is why Hojbjerg has been linked with a move away from Tottenham in recent months, and Romano has now stated that the central midfielder wants to leave the club in January.
He said on Kick: “We have to keep an eye on Italian clubs regarding Hojbjerg, because Italian clubs are keeping a close eye on Hojbjerg. I have heard that Juventus, despite many links, still see other players in this position more than Pierre Hojbjerg.
“Hojbjerg recently changed agent, in September, because he wants to leave, he wants to go to another club. But for Tottenham it has to be a permanent transfer or a loan with an obligation to buy. It must be a guaranteed transfer or nothing.
“Juventus, yes, they like the player, but from what I’ve heard, at least now it’s not a priority. Napoli value Pierre Hojbjerg.”
Tottenham need a replacement
Tottenham won’t really mind selling Hojbjerg if the price is right, but Ange Postecoglou will need to bring in a replacement before he will allow the Dane to leave.
Rodrigo Bentancur is out until February, while Yves Bissouma’s discipline hasn’t been the best. There are also still many doubts about the quality of Oliver Skipp at the highest level, which means that it is difficult to rely on him in the long term.
The £26 million Hojbjerg hasn’t been great for Tottenham recently, but he has the experience that some of Tottenham’s other central outfield players lack.
So if Tottenham allow him to leave next month, he must make sure he is replaced. If they don’t, they will be very light in midfield.
