According to FootballTransfers, West Ham have asked Tottenham Hotspur to sign Eric Dier as David Moyes wants to deepen his squad.
The news website reported [1 January] that Moyes wants to add another experienced player to his squad in the January transfer window, and the Hammers have already made first contact with Spurs.
It is understood that the club see the 29-year-old as a Harry Maguire-like centre-back, who was linked with a transfer in the summer.
With Dier’s contract expiring in 2024, the Spurs could be forced to sell the player for a lower price rather than letting the veteran leave for free at the end of the season.
The England international is clearly no longer part of the plans of Angelo Postecoglou, who was expected to approve a move in January, as he has accumulated only four appearances and one start in the Premier League.
It has been a devastating season for Dier so far. Before Postecoglou became manager in the summer, he was one of the most trusted and respected players at the club, but after the arrival of Micky van de Ven and the replacements of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies at central defender, he has been avoided.
West Ham, who have made a successful start to the 2023/24 campaign, will have a very busy second half of the season with matches in the Premier League and Europa League and will need reinforcements, especially if Thilo Kehrer leaves the club.
However, after winning the Europa League Conference last season, and with a top-four finish in the Premier League on the line, West Ham have the potential to attract much bigger names.
Moyes will be attracted to sign Dier by the potential price tag, as he is one of the best defenders with plenty of experience in the top tier of English football – 365 appearances for Spurs and 49 international caps for England.
