According to Sky Sports, the 27-year-old will undergo a medical with Spurs, who have the option to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the season. Werner shot to fame at Leipzig with 95 goals in 159 games, which helped him to a £47.5 million transfer to Chelsea in 2020.
But the German international was unable to continue his prolific form in the Premier League, scoring 10 goals in 56 appearances for Chelsea. Newcastle United were said to be “in talks” about Werner’s loan as early as the summer of 2022, before he returned to Leipzig for £25 million.
After a season and a half back at the Bundesliga club and a frustrating start to the current campaign, in which he has scored two goals in 14 appearances so far, Werner’s return to England has been confirmed.
In a rather surprising move, Tottenham are on the verge of signing Timo Werner from RB Leipzig as a loan transfer with an option to buy.
That’s according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, who spoke to X to reveal the latest information on the deal between Spurs and their Bundesliga counterparts.
The good news for Tottenham fans is that the deal is very close to being concluded and that the player will “arrive in London this evening” and start the process to complete the transfer.
Indeed, it is believed that his medical will be completed on Tuesday, while the paperwork for the loan move is “finalised”.
Timo Werner will join Tottenham on a six-month loan deal and Spurs could sign him permanently for a fee of €17-18 million.
It is now entirely up to the German international to make the most of this move after a terrible start to the Euro 2024 campaign at Leipzig, where he was without minutes and scored just two goals in 14 games in all competitions.
