Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the arrival of former Chelsea striker Tim Werner, who is on loan from RB Leipzig until the end of the season.
Spurs said in a club statement released on Tuesday that the loan deal includes “an option to sign a permanent contract in the summer”.
As The Athletic reported last week, Tottenham could sign 27-year-old Werner for a fee of “around €15-20 million” if he impresses Ange Postecoglou by the end of the loan period.
Spurs are not expected to pay Leipzig a loan fee for Werner, but will cover his wages in full for the duration of the loan.
Werner is likely to make his debut for his new club on Sunday at Old Trafford in a Premier League match against Manchester United.
It would be his 57th career EPL appearance after scoring 10 goals and 9 assists in 56 league games for Chelsea between 2020 and 2022.
Werner has worn the team number 11 in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge – the same number he wore throughout his time at Leipzig.
But the number 11 at Spurs is currently occupied by Bryan Gil, so Werner will “wear the number 16 shirt”, as confirmed in a club statement on Tuesday.
Tottenham’s number 16 jersey has been empty since the end of last season when Arnaut Danjuma left the club.
It was previously worn by Gareth Bale, Kyle Walker, Micky Hazard and Kieran Trippier.
