Tottenham confirm their first signing of the January transfer window with the loan signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, who will wear the number 16 jersey.
Werner, a former Chelsea star, has signed an initial six-month contract which includes the option to make the transfer permanent in the summer. Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has given the green light to sign the 27-year-old, with captain Son Heung-min set to miss next month’s Asian Cup with South Korea.
Werner returns to the Premier League with unfinished business, having had a mixed time at Chelsea, scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances after his £54million transfer. The Germany international played a major role in the Blues’ Champions League success in 2021.
Werner left Chelsea two years ago to return to his former club Leipzig for £25 million and although he scored 16 goals last season, opportunities under manager Marco Rosso were limited during that period as he started just four times in all competitions. He will make his Tottenham debut this weekend away at Manchester United.
Werner reveals that talks with Anzhet were key to his transfer to Spurs:
Werner has revealed that his talks with boss Ange Posetcoglou were key to the former Chelsea striker joining the club.
The German told SPURSPLAY: “I’m very happy to be here. I have joined a very, very big club.
Timo Werner indirectly labeled Tottenham a bigger club than Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea side after completing a move to the North London giants.
Recalling that his last stint in the Premier League didn’t go so well, he’s back to right the wrongs. The dig at his old club serves as a warning shot not only to Chelsea but the entire division.
“The conversation with the manager was a very, very good conversation. He immediately gave me a sense of what I need and feel to join the club.
“Also the tactics, the style, how he wants to play and how he lets the team play – for me I immediately thought it was a perfect fit.
“I hope to be the best player I can be here. I can play in all forward positions. One of my strengths is that I am flexible up front.
“When I left the Premier League, I missed it immediately because it’s the best league in the world. I also miss London, I settled really well here, I loved England and when I left I really missed it because it’s a great city and a great place.”
Although Werner has been inconsistent in recent seasons, his versatility will give Postecoglou more options in attack, as the former Stuttgart striker can play in a central role or on either wing.
