Arsenal want to extend Takehiro Tomiyasu’s contract and now he has gained momentum as a deal seems to be getting closer.

The 25-year-old has been excellent at times this season but has missed several games through injury and is currently on the Asian Cup.

His versatility in the back line makes him a very useful player for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are keen to sign him on a new contract amid interest from Bayern Munich and Napoli.

Fabrizio Romano has now given positive news on Tomiyasu’s contract negotiations.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Romano revealed that despite the strong interest in him, talks between Arsenal and Tomiyasu are going well ahead of a possible new contract.

“The negotiations are going very well. There are still some clarifications to be made regarding the structure of the new contract, but Tomiyasu wants to stay”, he stated.

“We have heard some rumours from Italy that Napoli, Roma and AC Milan are interested in him. It is true that many Italian clubs have considered a loan transfer for Tomiyasu.

“But Arsenal have been very clear in their message, saying there is no chance of Tomiyasu leaving.”

Can Arsenal count on Takehiro Tomiyasu?

Although Tomiyasu has been good this season, his injury history is very worrying as he has missed key games in all three of his campaigns at the club.

Arsenal are looking for a defender and, given the current injury situation, with Yuri Timber out long-term and Oleksandr Zinchenko having missed the last two games, are rightly doing so.

Even when Tomiyasu returns from the Asian Cup, Mikel Arteta has to be careful how much he relies on him.

Tomiyasu is the only realistic replacement for Ben White at right-back and is the best possible replacement for Zinchenko at left-back. With the Ukrainian currently in poor form, Tomiyasu would have been a better choice in recent weeks, especially in Arsenal’s draw at Anfield when Zinchenko was torn apart by Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s equaliser.

Tomiyasu signing a new contract will be a boost and he could be a useful player for Arteta for years to come, but there will always be a question mark over whether he can become a starter as he has always been badly injured in recent years.
