Rodrigo Bentancur secured a 2-2 draw for a depleted Tottenham, who missed the chance to return to the top four in the Premier League despite coming from behind twice in a thrilling encounter at Manchester United.
The Lilywhites dominated for long periods but fell behind inside three minutes when Erik ten Hag’s hosts got off to a blistering start when Rasmus Hojlund unleashed a shot from height.
Tottenham replied when Richarlison scored six goals in six league games with a deft header following Pedro Porro’s left corner.
But Rashford ensured the Red Devils went into the break with the lead when he exchanged one-two moves with Hojlund, then squeezed a low shot into the far corner to score his first goal at Old Trafford this season.
However, the lead lasted only seconds after the restart as Bentancur received a pass from debutant Tim Werner to draw the away side level again.
Tottenham continued to play up front but failed to finish off a resourceful attacking game. United continued to threaten on the counter-attack but came closest to equalising when substitute Scott McTominay headed over the bar at the death.
The result sees Man United move up to seventh place, eight points clear of fourth-placed Arsenal, having played one game more. Tottenham missed a chance to finish in the top four and are fifth behind Arsenal on goal difference.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Ivan Perisic has already played his last game for the Spurs.
Ivan Perisic is out of contract in the summer and his career in North London looks over.
Charlie Eccleshare, Spurs’ Athletic correspondent, reported the news following a recent comment by Ange Postecoglou.
Asked about the possibility of Perisic playing before the end of the campaign, the Australian manager replied as follows:
“No, he is working hard to be fair to Ivan … But yes, he won’t – it’s unlikely he will ever play for us again.”
Ivan Perisic has been out since September due to a complex cruciate ligament injury sustained in training.
The injury required surgery and he was out for 5 to 6 months, effectively ruling him out for the rest of the current season.
The winger is expected to return to his home country in the summer, where he will most likely reunite with his childhood club, Hajduk Split.
In his rich career, he has played for some powerful clubs such as Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund, winning major trophies including the Champions League and several championships.
Tottenham host Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday 26 January. Two days later, Manchester United will play Newport County or Eastleigh in the same competition.
