Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon will join Brentford on loan until the end of the season after his loan at Manchester United was terminated early.
The Erik ten Hag left-back arrived on deadline day to compensate for a long-term injury at left-back, but he proved expendable this month and United activated the termination clause of his season-long loan.
Luke Shaw has since returned from a hamstring problem – although he hasn’t played since Christmas – while Tyrell Malacia is not far from his return after major knee surgery in the summer. Reguilon racked up 12 appearances during a four-month stay for United.
His last appearance came on 30 December in the 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, when he earned a minute’s rest, and his last start came in the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth a fortnight ago.
Brentford have also suffered a long-term injury themselves, with left-back Rico Henry ruled out for an extended period, so have turned to Reguilon, according to Sky Sports. There will be no commitment or option to buy in his contract, it adds.
Brentford reportedly wanted to bring in a young player for development, but had to bring in Reguilon due to limited funds and options this month. United will travel to Brentford on 30 March where he could face his former teammate.
Towards the end of his stay at Old Trafford, Ten Hag preferred to use Diogo Dalot as the natural choice for Reguilon at left-back when Shaw and Malacia were unavailable. Shaw was injured in the win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day and has not been feeling well since.
He could return against Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round this month, while Malacia is expected to be back by the end of January. Victor Lindelof, who has also played at left-back this term, is currently recovering from surgery on an unspecified injury.
