Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is disappointed with refereeing decisions in Premier League matches.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou spoke to the BBC to give his opinion on how referees have officiated in the Premier League recently. The Spurs manager is concerned that referees are not making decisions in real time and are relying on VAR.
Postecoglou said in this regard:
“Referees nowadays seem to just let things go and leave it to VAR to decide. We are disappointed that we have conceded so late. There seems to be a trend here that referees are not willing to intervene in these situations, we have to accept that.”
Postecoglou also criticised Everton, suggesting that their only effective strategy was to send aerial balls into the penalty area, as both goals were scored from fouls. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario faced constant pressure from the home players throughout the first half. However, we cannot complain given that we did not deal effectively with their approach.
After witnessing Manchester City’s successful goal from a corner against Tottenham in the FA Cup, where the ball cleverly came onto goalkeeper Vicario’s head and Ruben Dias prevented his clearance, Everton opted for a similar strategy. In the 30th minute, Everton managed to score through Dominic Calvert-Lewin to make it 1-1. This goal seemed to unsettle Vicario and Spurs, and it showed.
Everton sensed an opportunity and continued with their strategy and came close to scoring again before the break. Vicario made a crucial save from Ben Godfrey’s headed shot and managed to parry the ball away before Harrison could capitalise on the rebound.
With the return of Cristian Romeo and Micky van de Ven from injury and the inclusion of Radu Dragusin, Postecoglou will be looking to strengthen Tottenham’s back line after struggling at the start of the season. However, their unfortunate trend of conceding goals in the 90th minute continues, leaving them at risk of being relegated from the top four by the end of the week.
In the dying moments of the game, Postecoglou’s team unfortunately failed to maintain their lead, Jarrad Branthwaite’s attempt deflected off Cristian Romero found the back of the net, leaving Guglielmo Vicario helpless at the far post. Despite the point, Everton are still in the relegation zone as they take on Manchester City next Saturday.
