Roy Keane hits Calvin Phillips after the West Ham player makes another mistake that costs his team.
Phillips joined West Ham last month on loan until the end of the season after a disappointing 18 months at Manchester City.
The England centre-forward joined City from Leeds United for £42m in 2022 but started just six games for the treble-winners as he struggled to fit into Pep Guardiola’s system.
Phillips joined West Ham hoping to reboot his career with a fresh start, but his spell with the London outfit started in the worst possible way.
David Moyes benched Phillips for the away game at Old Trafford after a shaky debut in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.
The manager brought on the midfielder in the 72nd minute with the Hammers trailing 2-0 and 12 minutes later Phillips gifted United a third goal to seal his side’s fate.
After a pass from Ben Johnson, Phillips tried to keep the ball out of the path of forward Scott McTominay, who managed to steal the ball and then passed it to Garnach, who scored his second goal of the game and United’s third.
Speaking to Sky Sports, former United midfielder Keane was less than impressed with Phillips.
“And then listen to Phillips, I don’t know what he’s trying to do,” Keane said.
“The way I look at it, he’s slow. But you’ve got to be punished and I think McTominay does really well here because it’s just a nice weighted pass, three to nothing.
“I just think it comes at the wrong angle. You can excuse him, but he came at the wrong angle and tried to shield people. Kudos to McTominay, nice and aggressive. End of the game.”
The incident came three days after Phillips gifted Bournemouth a goal with one of his first touches in a West Ham shirt.
Having played so little for City over the past 18 months, Phillips clearly needs some time to get back into the rhythm of playing regular top-class football.
But next time it won’t be easy for him; West Ham host Arsenal at the London Stadium on Sunday.
