Tottenham are now favourites to sign Morato from Benfica – a player who got his footballing chance thanks to Jan Vertonghen.

According to the Record, Fulham and Nottingham Forest also want the Brazilian.
However, Tottenham are currently leading the race for Morata’s signature.
The South American, whose release clause is said to be £68m, has been tracked by Spurs for some time, so the north Londoners are in the best position to sign the defender.
Morato has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season and contributed two assists.
The Benfica number five, coincidentally, got his chance in senior football with Benfica after Vertonghen’s injury – as reported in detail by Goal – at the start of the 2021/22 season.
Since then, Morato – who has been compared to Aymeric Laporte – hasn’t looked back, racking up a total of 77 appearances for the Portuguese giants.
Ange Postecoglou could be the next Ben Davies:
At least in our opinion, the interest in Morata suggests that Ange Postecoglou could be looking to sign an upgrade on Ben Davies.
The Welshman can play at left or centre-back for Spurs.
Morato happens to be equally capable of playing in both these areas and the Brazilian, at 22, would represent a much fresher option compared to the 30-year-old Davies.
The Benfica colossus has made 18 appearances on the left side of defence this season, while he has played eight games in the middle.
Ultimately, the arrival of Morata, who would be used exclusively in the middle, would be quite a shock after the £26 million signing of Radu Dragusin in January, so we think Davies could be the one to drop down to the lower ranks of the competition.
Only time will tell what Postecoglou thinks, so keep an eye on this situation.
