Tottenham Hotspur’s last defeat was against Wolves, which dropped the Lilywhites out of the top four and jeopardised their Champions League hopes. Based on his latest comments, it is safe to say that Dejan Kulushevski is not happy with the way his charges are playing.
Before the weekend kicked off, Spurs were sitting in fourth place with a one-point lead over fifth-placed Aston Villa. Ange Postecoglou’s charges were also on their fifth consecutive unbeaten run in the Premier League, so expectations were high that they could get another win.
However, that was not to be as Wolves proved to be a well-organised unit that can prevent Tottenham from playing their favoured attacking football. In the end, it was Gary O’Neill’s selectors who tricked Spurs with a counter-attack and took all three points on Saturday.
Kulusevski unhappy with Wolves defeat:
Dejan Kulusevski, who brought Spurs back into the game with an equalising goal just after half-time, expressed his dissatisfaction to The Standard after the game.
He said: “That’s the worst feeling. There is nothing worse than losing, so it was very difficult. We are not playing well enough, we have to improve. Now we have two weeks to work on it and come back a bit better.
“[My goal] certainly gave us hope. After that we played very well, we had a lot of chances but we didn’t score. Then [there was] a lack of discipline when we lost the ball.
“They had two or three counter-attacks where we weren’t good enough and then they made us pay. We had too many guys up front. We were too open and didn’t come back as hard as maybe we should have (he was certainly critical of the attackers in Sonny, Madders, Richarlison and himself for not tracking back to help the team, missed numerous cleae cut chances). They scored a couple of goals and that’s not good enough.”
The Swede, who gave credit to his opponents, added: “This league is very tough. If you don’t play well, it’s hard to win every game. We knew that Wolves are very good in their counter-attacks, so we should have done much better.
“They defended with ten players. It’s difficult to find solutions. We just need to improve [in games and] in training. In the last minute we [did it], we had a great chance. We didn’t score, it happens, it’s football, but we move on.”
On Saturday we were just not good enough and Wolves absolutely beat us tactically. Let’s hope that against Palace we can pick ourselves up and get back into the hunt for the top four, especially as Villa are waiting for us afterwards.
