Dean Jones, who handles transfers, claims that Tottenham’s plans to bring in a new defender this summer have not changed.
Defence is a position that Ange Postecoglou has wanted to strengthen since he arrived at the club. At the time they were linked with several centre-backs, but in the end they managed to sign Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.
The Dutchman has been outstanding since his arrival and has already established himself as a real signing of the season.
But after transferring several defenders who were not in Anže’s plans in the last two transfer periods, the club desperately needed another defender and managed to sign Radu Dragusino from Genoa, who chose the north London club over Bayern Munich.
But Jones claims that Spurs are not done strengthening their defensive line and will be looking for another central defender in the upcoming summer transfer window.
He claims that, as in January, Tottenham will look to make early moves in the transfer market to secure their targets quickly.
He told GiveMeSport:
“The situation hasn’t changed and Tottenham were always going to sign two top central defenders until 2024. They got one through the door and now, in the summer window, they are going to make a move for another.
“Calafiori and Morata might be mentioned now, but the net is wider. It opens up some interesting possibilities for them. Still, as far as I understand, they haven’t committed at this stage, although they want to make early moves in the summer transfer window, similar to what they did in the winter market.”
While names like Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, Morato from Benfica, Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth and Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton are circulating, Spurs are exploring different options outside of these players.
The profile of the defender needed for Anzhi’s style of play makes the hunt complicated. The ideal candidate must have exceptional pace and the technical ability to execute the high defensive line required by the manager’s tactics. As opponents often exploit gaps in the attack, speed becomes a key feature of Spurs’ defensive set-up.

The 17-year-old defender, who was born in Welwyn Garden City, is currently in his second season as a full-time member of our Under-18 squad.
In the 2022/23 campaign, he was part of our young squad that won the Under-17 Premier League Cup.
He has represented England at Under-16 level on the international stage.
