Following recent events, Tottenham’s “world class” star may be reassessing his future at the club.
The Spurs stars have been rejuvenated by the arrival of Postecoglou:
Manager Angelo Postecoglou’s season so far has been generally successful, although the Lilywhites have failed to win a major silver medal for a second season.
The Australian, who arrived from Celtic last summer, has brought with him an entertaining brand of high-intensity football that has won him many fans among both fans and the professional world. Postecoglou has also rejuvenated some squad members, such as centre-forward Yves Bissouma, while full-backs Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie are thriving in his new Spurs system.
But perhaps the biggest success story of all has been wing Son Heung-min. Last season was one to forget for the South Korean international, unable to reach the heights of previous years. Son shared the Golden Boot with Liverpool star Mohamed Salah in 2022, but scored just 10 goals in 36 league appearances last season.
By his standards, Son has already surpassed that figure by more than 23/24, although he was absent for an extended period during the Asian Cup.
“Maybe the nation he plays for is working against him, but I think he is a world-class player,” Postecoglou said of Son.
“If you look at his achievements in the Premier League, the toughest league in the world, no matter how the team went through the time he was here, his goals were always at the top.
“Even this year, before he left, I think he was probably the best attacking player in the competition, just my opinion of course. He would have been there for sure. He’s a world-class player. I think we covered his absence well.
“Richy (Richarlison) has obviously stepped up in terms of being a goal threat and a couple of other players, but it’s great for us to have a world-class player to continue the competition.”
The winger’s contract is due to expire in 2025, but now some news has come to light about his future at Tottenham.
Son could consider leaving if Tottenham fail to qualify for the Champions League:
According to Football Transfers, “recent developments” suggest that Son could “reassess” his future at Spurs, especially if Postecoglou’s team fail to secure Champions League football next term.
Saudi side Al-Ittihad apparently have a bold plan to include both Son and Salah in their attacking ranks in the summer, although it is unclear whether Son would opt for a move to the Middle East.
Son has also been praised for his Tottenham form by former defender Alan Hutton, with the 31-year-old performing admirably as a makeshift central striker this season.
“Ange wants Tottenham to play very footballing, it’s not about long balls down the pitch,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Wow, Son is very intelligent, he can link up play and run in behind, so it actually suits him and gives you the opportunity to bring in different wide players – like Richarlison, if he’s selected to play alongside him, and Maddison, who’s been great since signing. They have different options to play in that position. Son has no problem playing there.”
