Hugo Lloris says Daniel Levy has always worked in the best interests of the club.
Tottenham Hotspur cult hero Hugo Lloris is backing club chairman Daniel Levy for what he has done for the club, reports The Athletic (subscription required). The French goalkeeper spoke to the media before leaving the club.
Lloris spent almost 12 seasons at the club, most of them as captain. Few know the club as well as the 37-year-old. Last season, a series of poor performances led fans to chant “Levy out”. But Lloris backed the president with words:
“It’s easy to say to an outsider or as a player that he (Levy) should have done this or that. The reality is different. When you are at the top of the club, you are always interested in trying to make the best decisions.”
Lloris went on to assess Tottenham’s presence in the last few transfer windows. He believes that the club is in a strong position and that Daniel Levy deserves praise.
Levy and Tottenham have a long history:
Daniel Levy brought trophies to the North London club in 2001. He succeeded after Alan Sugar, the club’s chairman at the time, turned down Levy’s offer twice. Tottenham fans had high hopes for Levy because they did not fully appreciate Alan Sugar’s modus operandi.
Sugar’s way of running the club from a more business point of view did not appeal to the Spurs loyalists. Levy took over in 2001. Under his reign, the club has experienced ups and downs. But the fans wanted results and fun.
In the last season, balloons could be seen at the homes with the words ‘Levy out’, underlining the growing frustration of the fans. A smart businessman in Levy appointed Ange Postecoglou, who brought and continues to bring significant change to the club.
According to the Daily Mail, Levy is the Premier League’s highest paid chief executive. The next few years will be crucial and exciting for Daniel Levy and the club’s fans. Perhaps Ange can bring something that will satisfy all stakeholders.
