Leeds United are reportedly optimistic about securing a permanent deal for Joe Rodon from Tottenham this summer, following indications that the Welsh defender has no future under Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.
Rodon, 26, joined Tottenham in October 2020, but limited playing time led to a loan move to Leeds last summer. While the loan deal didn’t include an option to make the move permanent, Rodon has thrived at Leeds, becoming a crucial part of the squad. Leeds manager Daniel Farke has expressed his desire to secure Rodon on a permanent deal, and the player has also spoken positively about his time at Elland Road.
With 34 league appearances for Leeds, Rodon has played over 2900 minutes, marking his most consistent playing time in a single season. His impressive form has contributed to Leeds’ solid defensive record, conceding only three goals in 12 Championship games in 2024. Leeds’ success on the pitch has fueled hopes of promotion, and the club is reportedly backed to secure Rodon’s permanent signature regardless of their division next season.
Recent reports suggest that Rodon has been informed there is no pathway back for him at Tottenham, with Postecoglou reaching the conclusion that the Welsh defender won’t feature for the club again. Tottenham is rumored to set a £15 million fee for Rodon, and Leeds is seen as the frontrunner for his signature, given his satisfaction at the club and the backing to push through the deal.
Former defender Alan Hutton emphasized the importance of Rodon’s stay at Leeds, considering the player’s positive performances and happiness at the club. Hutton believes that a fee over £15 million could secure the deal, as Rodon’s time at Tottenham wasn’t as successful, and staying at Leeds could be his best route forward. Hutton expressed skepticism about Rodon breaking into the Tottenham team, stating that the high defensive line might not suit him at the moment.
“They’ll be looking to recoup more than what they paid for him,” he told Football Insider.
“We’re talking over £15million – that’s a huge figure that would probably get it done.
“I always think that his time at Tottenham wasn’t amazing, but he’s shown what he’s capable of at Leeds.
“He’s playing good football every week and looks happy.
“He’s at a huge club in their own right, so staying could be his best route going forward.”
On his chances of getting a second chance at Spurs, Hutton added: “Do I see him breaking into that Tottenham team going forward? No.
“The way that they play with such a high line – you need to be a top, top player to do what they do well.
“It might not suit him at this moment in time.”
Rodon’s five-year deal with Tottenham is set to expire in the summer of 2025. Leeds, buoyed by Rodon’s impact and their promotion ambitions, are hopeful of securing the player’s services permanently, while the defender appears content with life at Elland Road under Daniel Farke’s management.
