Former Tottenham player Alan Hutton believes that Harry Kane is unlikely to return to North London after just one season with Bayern Munich if he fails to secure silverware with the German club.
Kane made a high-profile move to Bayern during the summer transfer window, and although he has been prolific in the Bundesliga, he is yet to win a trophy with the team.
With Bayern trailing Bayer Leverkusen by 10 points in the league and an early exit from the DFB-Pokal, Hutton suggests that returning to Tottenham after just one season in Germany might be perceived as a failure by supporters.
Speaking on the matter, Hutton stated:
“He’s only just left,” Hutton, who was briefly teammates with Kane at Spurs, told Tottenham News.
“His goalscoring record over in Germany is obviously incredible, I know they’re behind Leverkusen which hasn’t been ideal for him in terms of the league situation, but I still think he would fancy staying there.
“I don’t know what the buy-back is, I don’t know the ins and outs of it but I can’t really see it if I’m totally honest. I don’t think he would come back after one season because in a way it would look as though he’d failed.
“If he comes back and he’s not won the league, I don’t think it’s a great look so I think he’ll want to stay and win trophies in Germany. From a fan’s point of view, if they get the opportunity to bring Kane back of course they would be happy.”
Hutton acknowledges Kane’s impressive goal-scoring record in Germany but suggests that the English striker would likely prefer to stay with Bayern and aim for silverware rather than return to Tottenham prematurely.
While the exact details of the buy-back clause in Kane’s contract are not publicized, it is confirmed that such a clause exists, as mentioned by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
