Former Leeds United star Jon Newsome has expressed concerns about defender Liam Cooper, suggesting that the 32-year-old may be past his prime and is no longer delivering defensively for the team.
Despite Cooper’s surprise inclusion in the starting lineup against Watford, Newsome believes that Daniel Farke’s decision to pair Ethan Ampadu with Joe Rodon in defense has proven more effective in recent matches.
He noted that Cooper appeared out of sorts during his rare start, failing to provide the defensive stability that Ampadu had offered in previous games.
Acknowledging Cooper’s contributions to the club over the years, Newsome emphasized that football can be unforgiving, and players eventually reach a point where their effectiveness diminishes. He suggested that Cooper’s performance against Watford highlighted his decline as a key player for Leeds.
Reflecting on Cooper’s struggles, Newsome pointed out instances where the defender was caught out, particularly during Watford’s second goal. He contrasted Cooper’s performance with the partnership of Ampadu and Rodon, noting that Leeds tends to play better football with the latter duo in defense.
The former Whites defender said on BBC Radio Leeds: “It’s a little bit easy with hindsight, but I have got to agree, I think Liam Cooper has played a couple of times and he has got caught.
“I don’t think he was great for the second goal and we look a lot better team when Ethan Ampadu is at the back with Joe Rodon.
“We dominate possession, we move the ball quicker and better.
“So yes, he has been a great servant to the football club but unfortunately, there comes a time when you are past your sell-by date.”
Despite Cooper’s status as the club captain, his lack of regular playing time this season indicates a decline in his importance within the squad. With only eight starts in the Championship, Cooper has found himself sidelined and faces an uncertain future as his contract expires in the summer.
Newsome’s observations highlight the challenges faced by aging players in maintaining their performance levels over time.
While Cooper has served Leeds well in the past, his recent struggles raise questions about his suitability for a starting role in the team if the Whites gain promotion back to the Premier League. As Leeds evaluates its defensive options moving forward, Cooper’s future at the club remains uncertain.
