Leicester City’s return to the Premier League has triggered the activation of the purchase clause in Issahaku Fatawu’s loan deal from Sporting Club de Portugal.
According to O Jogo, Fatawu’s loan agreement with the Foxes included a mandatory clause of €17 million in the event of promotion, which has now been fulfilled.
The Ghanaian international, who joined Leicester on loan last summer, played a pivotal role in their successful campaign. Despite the promotion, Sporting will not receive the full €17 million from Leicester.
This is because Sporting owe 50% of their future profits on Fatawu to his former club Steadfast, meaning they will only receive around €8 million from Leicester’s payment.
However, despite not receiving the full amount, Sporting can still consider the loan deal a success. Fatawu’s contributions were instrumental in Leicester’s promotion, and the transfer will still result in a significant profit for Sporting.
The situation highlights the complex financial arrangements involved in modern football transfers. While Leicester City are obligated to pay the agreed-upon fee for Fatawu’s permanent transfer, Sporting’s own financial obligations impact the final amount they will receive.
Nevertheless, both clubs can view the deal as mutually beneficial, with Leicester securing a promising player and Sporting profiting from their investment in Fatawu’s development.
