Celtic’s goalkeeping target, Martin Dubravka, is reportedly eager to join the Scottish champions, according to a recent report. The 35-year-old, currently on international duty with Slovakia, impressed by keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 victory over Belgium.
As reported by Football Insider, Dubravka is keen on replacing Joe Hart at Celtic, should the club make a formal offer.
The Slovakian goalkeeper is reportedly interested in moving from England’s North East to Glasgow’s East End. Following his performance at the Euros, his agent will likely be fielding interest from various clubs across Europe, as well as teams in Saudi Arabia and America.
Newcastle United, Dubravka’s current club, are willing to let the 35-year-old leave as they pursue the signing of James Trafford to compete with Nick Pope for the No.1 spot.
Dubravka made 30 appearances last season, but it has become clear that manager Eddie Howe is targeting a younger second-choice goalkeeper. With one year remaining on his contract, Dubravka has been given the green light to find a new club.
Football Insider revealed on Friday, 14 June, that the Magpies have informed Dubravka he is free to seek new opportunities, as they shift their focus to securing a younger backup for Nick Pope.
Celtic are actively searching for a replacement for Joe Hart following his retirement and are considering a potential move for Dubravka. The Slovakian international has expressed openness to a move to Parkhead, stating he would “consider” joining Celtic if they present a “concrete” offer.
Dubravka would be a fitting successor to Hart, but Celtic are cautious about Newcastle’s demands, given the goalkeeper’s remaining year on his contract at St James’ Park. Additionally, wage demands pose a concern for the Glasgow giants, with Dubravka reportedly earning £40,000 per week at Newcastle.
Celtic are likely evaluating several candidates to replace Joe Hart. While Dubravka meets the criteria of being available and experienced, he would not be a long-term solution due to his age. Nonetheless, his potential signing would bring immediate quality and experience to the squad.
