Manchester United are reportedly concerned about Everton’s high asking price for defender Jarrad Branthwaite this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils are actively seeking a new centre-back, with Branthwaite among the potential targets. However, Romano indicates that United are unwilling to spend ‘crazy money’ on the deal.

Everton are said to be demanding £65-70 million for Branthwaite, who had an impressive season at Goodison Park, playing a key role in helping the club avoid relegation. The Times previously reported that United have already agreed on personal terms with the Englishman, who could be the first signing under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ownership.

United are looking for a replacement for Raphael Varane, who left the club on a free transfer. Alongside Branthwaite, their shortlist includes Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo. Both are considered cheaper alternatives and could become the primary targets if Everton maintain their high valuation for Branthwaite.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano mentioned that Branthwaite, praised as an ‘incredible’ defender by journalist Bence Valyi, is interested in joining Manchester United. However, Everton’s reluctance to lower their demands is proving a significant hurdle:

“Manchester United keep working on a new centre-back. Branthwaite remains on the list, as I told you yesterday. Man United will do that only in case it’s not going to be crazy money. But at the moment, Everton want £65-70 million for Branthwaite. So it’s not an easy deal at all, even if Man United have the green light from the player. At the moment, Everton keep asking, according to Man United, too much for the player.”

United reportedly had an initial £43 million bid for Branthwaite rejected earlier this month. The club is unlikely to spend heavily this summer until they secure funds through player sales.

Recent reports suggest their starting transfer budget is only £50 million, prompting United to consider offloading players like Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, and Casemiro to raise additional funds. These sales are crucial to supporting Erik ten Hag as he prepares for his third season in charge.

As the summer transfer window progresses, Manchester United’s ability to balance their budget while securing top targets like Branthwaite will be pivotal in shaping their squad for the upcoming season.
