Celtic are poised to secure the signing of Dominik Livakovic from Fenerbahce, in what could be a significant transfer for the Scottish club.
According to sources speaking to Football Insider, Celtic have made an informal offer of £7.6 million for the Croatian goalkeeper, as they look to replace Joe Hart following his retirement.
Livakovic, 29, is currently representing Croatia at Euro 2024, and it is understood that Celtic have engaged in extensive negotiations to finalise the deal.
Former Scotland defender Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested that Livakovic’s market value could soar with impressive performances at the European Championship. He described the potential transfer as a “smart” move, highlighting the prospect of a lucrative future sale if the goalkeeper performs well and attracts interest.
Livakovic had an impressive season with Fenerbahce, making 47 appearances and keeping 21 clean sheets. His contributions helped the Turkish club finish second in the league and reach the quarter-finals of the Conference League.
Celtic’s pursuit of Livakovic has been long-standing. Last summer, club legend Frank McAvennie, in an interview with Football Insider, urged the Hoops to intercept his move to Fenerbahce. Now, with financial resources available, Hutton believes Celtic are in a strong position to secure the signing.
“If he kicks on and does what everybody expects him to do, it would be a smart signing,” Hutton told Football Insider. “They could make a lot of money out of it.
“The Euros has normally got an impact on that, if he goes there and plays really well, his valuation could go through the roof as we’ve seen previously. It’ll be an interesting one to watch what happens.
“These are big numbers, but I think Celtic are a club that can pay that sort of money and fees, especially if they get money in. We’ll see how it develops, but Celtic have definitely got the scope to spend that kind of money.”
As the transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on Celtic to see if they can complete this high-profile acquisition and bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
