Everton appear to be on the brink of securing a significant signing as they continue their summer recruitment drive. Sources from HITC suggest that the Toffees have reached an agreement with Ligue 1 forward Iliman Ndiaye.
This comes as part of manager Sean Dyche’s plans to revamp the squad, following the arrivals of Leeds United winger Jack Harrison and Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam.
The club’s financial health has been under scrutiny, with ongoing Premier League Spending Rules (PSR) issues potentially impacting their transfer activities. Despite these challenges, Everton have initiated discussions with French side Marseille regarding a potential move for Ndiaye.
Ndiaye, who has been given the green light to leave Marseille by new manager Roberto De Zerbi, has attracted significant interest from Everton. The Senegalese international was previously close to joining the Merseyside club from Sheffield United last summer, before opting for a move to France. However, his tenure in Ligue 1 has been underwhelming, with just three goals to his name, prompting him to consider a return to England.
De Zerbi, who recently took charge at Marseille following his departure from Brighton & Hove Albion, is reshaping his squad and has deemed Ndiaye surplus to requirements. HITC reported that De Zerbi, who was also linked with the Manchester United job, is now firmly establishing his plans in Marseille, which do not include the Senegalese winger.
The 24-year-old Ndiaye is not short of admirers, with several UK clubs expressing interest. Fulham, Leicester City, and Rangers have all been linked, but Everton are the only club to have made a definitive move.
Marseille, who acquired Ndiaye for approximately £20 million, are looking to recoup most of this fee. However, Everton are reportedly seeking a loan deal with an option to buy, which Ndiaye is also said to favour.
Ndiaye made a notable impact during his spell with Sheffield United, particularly remembered for his stunning goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup.
Former professional Clinton Morrison lauded his performance, telling BBC Radio 5 Live in March 2023, “It’s a brilliant goal. The close control is fantastic. He goes past Porro like he wasn’t there. He’s an outstanding player, Ndiaye. It’s a brilliant goal.”
Should the deal materialize, it would offer Ndiaye a fresh opportunity to demonstrate his talents in the Premier League. His flair and potential had marked him out as a standout performer in the Championship, and Everton would hope he can replicate or exceed that form in the top flight.
The Toffees’ pursuit of Ndiaye signals their ambition despite financial constraints, and his addition could bolster their attacking options significantly.
