EXCLUSIVE – Highly experienced Euro 2024 star linked with Celtic move shares when he plans on making the decision to JOIN club this summer

June 25, 2024

The future of Scott McKenna looks set to become clearer now that the Celtic-linked defender’s participation in Euro 2024 with Scotland has ended.

Scotland’s defeat to Hungary concluded McKenna’s involvement in the tournament, allowing him to focus on his next career move. Released by Nottingham Forest, reports had suggested that the 27-year-old was on the verge of signing for FC Copenhagen. However, it seems no decision has yet been made, as McKenna has revealed a timeline for deciding his future.

McKenna Plans to ‘Relax’ Amid Celtic Links

The Scotland defender has admitted feeling frozen out at Forest despite a successful first two seasons, during which he made over 100 appearances. Spending the final year of his contract out on loan indicated that his time at the English club was over. Now a free agent, McKenna plans to take some much-needed rest before making any decisions.

McKenna told The Herald Sport: “It’s a case of going away, trying to recover. It’s been a long season for a few reasons. Obviously starting the season at Forest and then being frozen out was something I’d never experienced and that was testing at times. Then going to Copenhagen and getting to play for the last six months has been stressful. So it’s time to go and relax, put the feet up for a few weeks and see what develops.”

Celtic’s Defensive Needs

Brendan Rodgers needs to secure a reliable first-team defender to partner with Cameron Carter-Vickers for the upcoming season. While Liam Scales did a commendable job last season, some high-profile errors have led fans to question whether the Republic of Ireland international is the long-term solution in central defence.

Whether McKenna is the answer to this need remains to be seen, but as a free signing, adding an experienced international defender to the squad is a low-risk move worth considering.

McKenna’s blend of experience and availability makes him an attractive prospect for Celtic as they aim to fortify their defence. His performance at the club level and international stage suggests he could be a valuable addition. As he takes time to recuperate and consider his options, Celtic will be keenly watching his next move, hopeful of securing a deal that could bolster their squad for the challenges ahead.
