June 28, 2024

Celtic’s pursuit of Paulo Bernardo continues now that the midfielder has returned to Benfica following a successful loan spell at Parkhead last season.

During his time with Brendan Rodgers’ squad, the Portugal Under-21 international demonstrated his value, contributing four goals and three assists in 33 appearances [Transfermarkt].

This performance has led Celtic to seek a permanent deal for Bernardo, initially priced at £6 million, but reports suggest they are attempting to negotiate this down to around £3.5 million.

However, his wages might pose a significant hurdle in reaching an agreement. As Celtic fans eagerly await updates in the transfer market, more details about Bernardo’s situation have emerged.

According to Portuguese publication Record, Bernardo will report for Benfica’s pre-season camp despite ongoing negotiations with Celtic.

Manager Roger Schmidt is keen to have him available due to several internationals still being away. Bernardo will be joined by Henrique Araujo and Martim Neto, although none of the trio are expected to have long-term futures at Estadio da Luz.

The outlet claims that Bernardo’s ‘plan’ is to move to Scotland permanently, reaffirming his desire to join Celtic ahead of the new season. Despite this, he will remain involved in training with his parent club until an agreement is reached, even though he is considered surplus to requirements in Lisbon.

This development may concern Celtic supporters, but it is standard practice for a player under contract to participate in pre-season preparations with their current club. The hope remains that Celtic can finalise a deal to bring Bernardo back to Parkhead before the competitive season kicks off.

For now, Bernardo’s return to Benfica is a temporary step as negotiations continue. Celtic fans will be hoping that the club can secure his services permanently, solidifying their squad for the upcoming campaign.
