Celtic are expected to sell Gustaf Lagerbielke in the near future as the Scottish champions look to recoup their outlay for the Swedish defender.

The 24-year-old was signed from Elfsborg last summer but has failed to make an impact at Celtic. As reported by Football Insider, Celtic are keen to reshape their squad in the image of manager Brendan Rodgers.

Although Rodgers was in charge when Lagerbielke arrived, it is clear that he does not see the defender having a future at the club.

Lagerbielke joined Celtic after being recommended to the club by Carl Starfelt’s agent, following Starfelt’s switch to La Liga side Celta Vigo.

The £3m signing was expected to replace his compatriot, with Maik Nawrocki also arriving in the summer. However, the Swedish central defender has made just ten appearances and scored one goal – the winner against Feyenoord in the UCL.

Rumours of Starfelt returning from Spain would push Lagerbielke further out of the first-team picture. Stephen Welsh and Nawrocki are currently ahead of him, with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales being Rodgers’ preferred pairing as Celtic secured the League and Scottish Cup Double. Celtic will hope to recoup some of the cash they paid to Elfsborg last summer.

Rodgers spent last year assessing the squad to determine which players had a future at the club. It seems he has decided that Sead Hakšabanović is surplus to requirements, prompting the latter’s exit.

Players like Hyeon-gyu Oh are also tipped to depart as Rodgers looks to put his stamp on the team ahead of his second season in charge.

This potential shake-up underscores a period of transition at Celtic Park, as the club aims to build a squad capable of continuing their domestic dominance and making an impact in European competitions. The likely departure of Lagerbielke marks another step in Rodgers’ bid to refine his team and achieve success on multiple fronts.
