Rocco Vata is poised to join Watford as his contract with Celtic expires today, marking the end of his time with the Glasgow giants. The teenage forward, who has been the subject of intense speculation over the past year, has attracted interest from clubs in Italy, particularly in January.
Vata, a product of the Celtic Academy, has had limited exposure to the SPFL Premiership, playing less than ten minutes last season. Nonetheless, he made an impact by scoring a goal in the Scottish Cup against Buckie Thistle.
Initially deployed as a pacey right winger in the Celtic B team competing in the Lowland League, Vata has transitioned into a striker over the past 18 months.
Last summer seemed opportune for integrating Vata into the first team and securing his future with a new contract. However, the arrivals of Marco Tilio, Yang Hyun-jun, and Luis Palma relegated him further down the pecking order.
Consequently, Vata spent most of the last season with the Hoops’ B team. His brief stints with the senior team include a substitute appearance in a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen in February and an assist during a 5-0 Scottish Cup victory over Buckie Thistle.
With his contract now expired, several clubs are reportedly keen on acquiring Vata’s services. Among them, Watford has emerged as the frontrunner. The latest reports indicate that Watford has made significant strides in negotiations with Vata’s agents.
Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph highlighted the situation, stating:
“Watford are in advanced talks with Celtic forward Rocco Vata. It’s understood the 19-year-old has visited the facilities and met with club reps. Watford are offering Vata a four-year deal. Celtic would be due £237,000 in training compensation if he joins Watford.”
Vata’s potential move comes amidst Celtic’s ongoing efforts to streamline their first team squad, which remains bloated at over 30 players. Just last week, Sead Haksabanovic departed for Malmo, underscoring the club’s need to manage its roster effectively.
