A former Celtic player looks set to leave Liverpool during the summer transfer window, bringing potential opportunities and changes for both clubs.

Last season, amidst a raft of injuries to his backline, Hoops boss and former Anfield manager Brendan Rodgers brought in Nat Phillips on a six-month loan deal.

Although his impact wasn’t massive, Phillips featured eight times before returning to Merseyside at the start of 2024. He then impressed during a loan spell at Cardiff City in the English Championship in the latter half of the season, showcasing his defensive capabilities.

However, upon returning to Liverpool, his future remains uncertain. The Athletic reports that Phillips, “who has one year remaining on his contract, looks certain to move on,” making him a sought-after player this summer.

Another Liverpool situation that Celtic might be monitoring closely is that of back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Celtic were first linked with a move for the Republic of Ireland international in January.

Now, with Joe Hart retiring after three successful seasons as Celtic’s number one, the urgency to find a new keeper has heightened.

Several names have surfaced as potential replacements for Hart. Martin Dubravka, Viljami Sinisalo, and Asmir Begovic are among those being considered.

Additionally, the potential departure of current back-up keeper Benjamin Siegrist, due to his restricted playing time, adds another layer of complexity to Celtic’s goalkeeping situation.

Kelleher’s price tag is reportedly around £25 million, a substantial fee reminiscent of the amounts Celtic received for Jota and Kieran Tierney.

However, the report notes, “it remains to be seen if a club will test Liverpool’s resolve to keep £25m-rated goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher,” suggesting that no formal offers have yet been made to entice Liverpool into a sale.

Phillips’ departure from Liverpool could provide him with a fresh start and more consistent playing opportunities.
