Alan McInally has criticised Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto following his performance in the 2-0 victory over Hull City on 31 August.
Although Leeds secured all three points against their Yorkshire rivals, McInally was unimpressed with Gnonto’s contribution.
The Italian international was in the starting lineup just hours after the announcement of his new four-year contract. However, his disallowed goal was the highlight of a performance that left McInally wanting more.
Speaking live on Sky Soccer Saturday, McInally didn’t hold back: “Wilfried Gnonto, he’s not done enough for me.”
Despite the victory, Gnonto appears to be struggling to recapture the form he displayed consistently last season. Leeds’ win against Hull was driven by goals from youngster Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe, who has been linked with a move away from the club.
Given Gnonto’s newly extended contract at Elland Road, many expected him to play a key role in Leeds’ attack this season. However, since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, his impact has been limited.
This stands in contrast to other players who have stepped up, such as new signing Manor Solomon, who provided an assist shortly after the hour mark against Hull.
If Leeds United are serious about securing automatic promotion this season, they will need Gnonto to raise his game and become a more consistent contributor to their goal tally.
With the departure of key players like Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, the onus is on Gnonto to fill the gap and lead the line effectively.
