“Throwing in the towel” – Celtic have BROKEN The Gers beyond repair as Keith Jackson accuses ONE Rangers star for giving up like scared baby and gifts the game to Celtic at Parkhead following disappointing 3-0 defeat

Keith Jackson has launched a scathing critique of Rangers captain James Tavernier, accusing him of “throwing in the towel” during the team’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Celtic on Sunday, 1 September.

The loss has heaped more pressure on Rangers’ manager Philippe Clement, who is already under intense scrutiny at Ibrox, with the result doing little to endear him to the fans.

Tavernier, who has been a mainstay in the Rangers lineup this season despite rumours linking him with a move away during the summer transfer window, has become the focal point of criticism following the defeat.

Jackson, writing in the Daily Record on Monday, 2 September, did not mince his words:

“The truth is – as unpalatable as it may be for them to swallow – is that these fans are now on the point of throwing in the towel, in the same way, that captain Tavernier did yesterday afternoon while his team was being taken apart by the neighbours.”

The 32-year-old right-back has spent nearly a decade at Ibrox since his arrival from Wigan Athletic in 2015. His commitment to the club has never been in question, but his performances in recent times have left much to be desired.

Many supporters had expected Tavernier to depart during the summer, with interest reportedly coming from several clubs. Yet, he remains at Rangers and continues to feature prominently in Clement’s plans.

This persistence in sticking with Tavernier, despite his perceived decline, has irked a significant portion of the Rangers fanbase.

The decision to keep him in the starting XI, particularly with Dujon Sterling waiting in the wings, has been a point of contention.

Sterling, signed in the summer, has had limited opportunities to showcase his abilities in his preferred position, being used in midfield to accommodate his inclusion in the team. This has only exacerbated the frustration among the supporters.

While Tavernier has borne the brunt of the blame for the latest defeat, questions are also being raised about Clement’s tactics and team selection.

Preparing his side to face a resurgent Celtic under Brendan Rodgers at Parkhead was always going to be a daunting task, but the manner of the defeat has left fans disillusioned.

Rangers’ dismal record in the Old Firm clashes – with just one win in the last 12 meetings – has cast a shadow over their Scottish Premiership title ambitions this season.

As the fallout from the loss continues, both Tavernier and Clement find themselves under increasing pressure. The captain’s long service may have earned him some goodwill, but patience is wearing thin among the Gers’ faithful.
