Leicester City are still facing the likelihood of a points deduction this season, sources have told Football Insider.
On the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke expressed doubts over Leicester’s ability to avoid punishment, stating, “I don’t think they’ll get away with it this time.”
The recently promoted Premier League side narrowly avoided a seven-point deduction earlier in the season by exploiting a legal loophole in the rules.
However, they could still face sanctions for a separate offence. If Leicester have recorded significant losses, they could face another charge that may result in a points deduction.
Last season, as a Championship side, Leicester’s permitted losses were capped at £83 million, rather than the £105 million allowed for Premier League clubs.
This could place them in violation of Profit and Sustainability (PSR) regulations. It’s expected that the club will learn their fate by December.
Despite securing around £40 million from the transfers of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and manager Enzo Maresca to Chelsea, Leicester’s financial issues may persist.
Football Insider previously reported that the club had fallen “well short” of meeting spending limit requirements, and they were still classified as a Premier League team when their accounts were submitted in June.
Leicester’s return to the Premier League has been challenging. The Foxes have picked up just one point from their opening three matches, leaving them 15th in the table.
Steve Cooper’s side will look to improve when they face Crystal Palace in their next fixture on 14 September, but the looming threat of a points deduction could significantly impact their season.
