The fallout from the Glasgow Derby continues to rumble on, with former Rangers defender Marvin Andrews offering his thoughts on the defeat to Celtic.
The 3-0 loss at Celtic Park has put Brendan Rodgers’ side firmly in control of the Scottish Premiership title race, even though Aberdeen are level on points at the top of the table.
However, it’s the five-point gap between Celtic and Rangers that is of most concern. Philippe Clement’s side are already under immense pressure just a few games into the new season.
Rangers can ill-afford to drop any more points if they are to have any hope of keeping pace with their rivals from the other side of Glasgow.
For Andrews, the defeat has been a tough pill to swallow. The former defender, who enjoyed a successful spell at Ibrox, admits that Celtic are currently the superior side.
Celtic ‘much stronger’ than Rangers:
This week, 67 Hail Hail has gathered the opinions of several former Celtic and Rangers players regarding the growing gap between the two clubs.
While Graeme Souness had an unusual perspective, and Ally McCoist confessed he was ‘devastated’ by the result, Marvin Andrews offered a more realistic assessment of the situation.
Speaking to the Sunday Mail, Andrews acknowledged the gulf in class between the two sides and urged Rangers fans to keep believing despite the difficult situation.
“That phrase – keep believing – will always come up at Rangers in situations like this,” said Andrews.
“Whenever the club are in a bit of difficulty, I hear fans using it. And you HAVE to believe you can turn things around. I’m not in the dressing room so I don’t know the mindset of these players. But they’re obviously in a tough place – everyone can see that Celtic are much stronger than us. So it looks dull and gloomy right now for supporters.”
Celtic are miles ahead of Rangers:
It’s becoming increasingly clear that Celtic are streets ahead of Rangers at present. On the pitch, Rodgers has his side firing on all cylinders, comfortably brushing aside domestic competition.
Off the pitch, the Celtic board has been equally impressive, securing shrewd transfers and strengthening commercial partnerships, including their successful deal with Adidas.
With just four league games played, Celtic have already scored 12 goals and haven’t conceded a single one.
Their strength in depth, bolstered by a productive summer transfer window, makes it difficult to see where a serious challenge to their dominance might come from.
It will take something extraordinary to stop Celtic this season, and at this stage, it’s hard to see anyone rising to that challenge.
