Rangers are set to block any move for James Tavernier this week, as they are unable to find a replacement for the right-back, sources have revealed to Football Insider.
Trabzonspor and Besiktas have both shown interest in signing the Rangers captain, with the Turkish transfer window open until 13 September.
There were also links to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, managed by Steven Gerrard, but with the Saudi window now closed, no deal could be made there.
Rangers have reportedly reacted to mounting fan criticism of Tavernier by making it clear that he is not for sale. However, the club is understood to be open to reconsidering this stance in January, should the right offer be presented.
With the Scottish transfer window now shut, Philippe Clement’s side would be unable to bring in a replacement for the defender, leaving them reluctant to weaken their squad at this stage of the season.
Tavernier’s performances have come under scrutiny from supporters this term, with one fan labelling him a “loser” following Rangers’ 3-0 defeat to Celtic. Despite the backlash, Tavernier was the club’s top scorer last season and remains a key figure in the squad.
He is under contract at Ibrox until June 2026, with next year marking a decade since the Englishman joined Rangers from Wigan. So far this season, Tavernier has made seven appearances, contributing two assists.
Any sale in the immediate future would leave Rangers needing to dip into the free-agent market for a replacement, something they seem unwilling to do.
