Ally McCoist has voiced his support for former Rangers chairman Dave King to step in and help steer the club through what he fears is a difficult period.
The Ibrox legend is concerned about the state of affairs at his beloved Rangers following the departure of chairman John Bennett, who left the club recently.
McCoist, who remains a significant figure at the club, praised Bennett while admitting that the club’s current situation leaves much to be desired.
The 60-year-old is optimistic that King, who was previously at the helm between 2015 and 2020, could be the man to give Rangers the shake-up they need.
In recent months, King has been increasingly vocal about his concerns for the club’s future, and with Bennett now out of the picture, he has expressed his intention to return to help guide Rangers through a challenging period.
King believes the club requires new leadership with a long-term strategy and has proposed overseeing the first two years of this transformation.
Speaking on talkSPORT after King’s announcement, McCoist said:
“We’ve got to do something. We have to, the first thing I would like to do is echo the views and wish John Bennett a return to full health. He is a good man and that is the most important thing.
“At this moment in time, we have no chairman, (former chief exec) James Bisgrove left for Saudi Arabia, you have got to say, the club is in a state, it is in a state.”
Despite his concerns, McCoist has offered cautious backing to King, though the two differ on the topic of external investment.
King is adamant that his return would be supported by investors with deep pockets, while McCoist remains sceptical ABOUTthe likelihood of wealthy backers coming forward to rescue the club.
“Dave King has come in before, and grabbed the club by the scruff of the neck, shook it around, and turned it around. But can he do it again? At this moment in time, I think he is probably our best option.
“We are not going to get any Arab Sheikh coming over, I don’t see it happening,” McCoist said.
“From where I am sitting, the best option would be to go with another tried and tested. He has been there before and had success. It would be a gamble, no matter who comes in, but I think someone like Dave King, who has had a proven track record, would be good.”
