The Friedkin Group has reached an agreement to acquire Everton, just two months after initially withdrawing from negotiations to buy Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in the club.
The American firm, led by billionaire Dan Friedkin, reopened discussions with Everton’s majority owner over the weekend, aiming to outmaneuver interest from Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor.
Textor had emerged as the leading contender in Everton’s drawn-out takeover saga after Friedkin stepped back. However, with Textor holding a 45% stake in Palace, Premier League rules prevent him from owning another club in the same division, leaving him exposed to a competing bid. That bid has now come from Friedkin, who has agreed terms to acquire Moshiri’s share.
Graham Potter is reportedly “very much interested” in taking over as Everton manager, should the position become available, according to sources speaking to Football Insider.
Senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, revealed that the former Chelsea boss could be in line for the role if the club decides to part ways with Sean Dyche.
The 49-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in 2023 but is said to be eager to return to management, with Goodison Park a potential next destination.
The situation at Everton is being closely monitored after the club’s winless start to the Premier League season, which has left them languishing at the bottom of the table.
Dyche is under immense pressure as frustration mounts among fans over Everton’s poor performances.
The club has conceded more goals than any other team in the division and has also suffered an early exit from the EFL Cup.
According to Football Insider, Dyche could face the sack if results do not improve, with upcoming fixtures against Leicester City and Crystal Palace seen as crucial.
Despite the current predicament, sources have indicated that the Everton board still values Dyche for his efforts in steering the club away from relegation last season.
However, should their form fail to improve, the club may act swiftly to avoid another relegation battle.
Potter, who previously managed Chelsea and Brighton, has significant Premier League experience and could be seen as a viable candidate to help turn Everton’s fortunes around.
Everton’s next test comes on Saturday (21 September), with a vital match against Crystal Palace, where Dyche’s future could be decided.
