Ally McCoist has revealed that Rangers fans gave him “dog’s abuse,” accusing him of overlooking their famous win against Borussia Dortmund under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
However, the Rangers legend insists the criticism was misplaced, as he was specifically referring to Celtic’s poor record in Germany, not Rangers’.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday morning, McCoist was hosting a discussion ahead of Celtic’s upcoming clash with Borussia Dortmund.
While praising Brendan Rodgers’ side and suggesting they “have a chance” of pulling off an upset, McCoist balanced his optimism with some harsh statistics about Celtic’s performances on German soil.
The former Rangers striker pointed out that Celtic have never won a European match in Germany, losing nine of their last 11 trips.
In conversation with Andy Townsend and Paul Lambert, he highlighted the Hoops’ struggles, but it seems some Rangers supporters misheard him.
As the segment continued, McCoist felt compelled to clarify his comments after receiving a flood of criticism from Gers fans.
Rangers, of course, famously triumphed 4-2 over Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion during the round of 32 on their road to the Europa League final in Seville. However, McCoist made it clear that he hadn’t forgotten about that historic victory.
“There’s something I just need to say quickly. All the Rangers fans have been on and giving me dog’s abuse, because they reckon I missed Rangers winning in Dortmund a couple of years ago,” McCoist explained.
“But I didn’t say a Scottish team. What I said was Celtic have lost each of their last four and nine of their last 11. There was no mention of any other team.
“So get off my back. Dear me, it’s bad enough saying Celtic are doing well without the Rangers fans turning on me.”
