West Ham United are reportedly prepared to listen to offers for veteran striker Michail Antonio in the January transfer window, as they aim to strengthen their attacking options.
According to Football Insider, the club is ready to part ways with Antonio, following a sluggish start to the season that has left new manager Julen Lopetegui under early pressure.
Despite nine summer signings, including big names such as Niclas Fullkrug, West Ham’s performances have faltered.
Lopetegui and director of football Tim Steidten, who orchestrated the club’s recruitment drive, are now turning their attention to potential departures in a bid to streamline the squad.
Antonio, who has been a long-serving figure at the London Stadium, is seemingly one of the players the club would be willing to move on.
Antonio Could Leave West Ham in January:
The Hammers have struggled in front of goal this season, netting just six times in six Premier League games.
Antonio, who has started five of those matches, has failed to find the back of the net. Despite being handed the starting striker role, the Jamaica international has been unable to rediscover the form that made him the club’s all-time Premier League top scorer.
With West Ham spending £27 million on Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund, and with Danny Ings returning to full fitness, Antonio’s position in the squad is becoming increasingly precarious.
The club is also reportedly still interested in bringing in another forward, which could further limit Antonio’s opportunities.
Interest in the 33-year-old has come from both the Middle East and the Premier League in previous transfer windows, but no deal has been agreed so far.
However, with Antonio’s contract expiring next summer, West Ham are keen to cash in during the January window to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
Although Antonio has been a crucial player for the club, described as “truly exceptional” during his peak, his future now seems uncertain. Once Fullkrug recovers fully from his Achilles injury, Antonio is expected to find himself back on the bench.
Julen Lopetegui Under Pressure:
Despite growing pressure, West Ham are currently standing by Lopetegui, as revealed by GIVEMESPORT.
The Hammers’ poor start to the season has seen them embarrassed in the EFL Cup by Liverpool, and they have secured just one victory in the Premier League.
Fan frustration is mounting, as the team’s performances show little sign of improvement since David Moyes’ departure.
However, David Sullivan, the club’s chairman, was reportedly eager to bring Lopetegui to the London Stadium and is reluctant to make any rash decisions regarding his future.
Nevertheless, the acceptance within the club is that results and performances must improve swiftly if Lopetegui is to avoid further scrutiny.
