Liverpool could be in the market for one, if not two, centre-backs by the time 2025 rolls around.
The Reds, having addressed key areas over the summer, may have overlooked the need to reinforce their defence, something that could come back to haunt them as the season progresses.
Despite this, Arne Slot, Liverpool’s head coach, opted not to bring in a new central defender during the last transfer window.
With four quality options already at his disposal, including Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and emerging talent Jarell Quansah, the decision seemed reasonable at the time.
However, a few looming uncertainties suggest that Liverpool may need to act sooner rather than later.
One major question revolves around the future of Joe Gomez, whose form and injury history have raised doubts.
Virgil van Dijk, meanwhile, is currently out of contract at the end of the season and could leave on a free transfer, which would represent a massive void in Liverpool’s backline.
If these two situations unfold unfavourably for the club, it would leave Slot short in central defence.
As such, Liverpool are already being linked with potential defensive recruits, and several names have emerged as possible targets for 2025.
Among the more surprising names is Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton. The 22-year-old centre-back recently returned to action after an early-season injury and has made an immediate impact for the Toffees.
Branthwaite’s absence coincided with Everton’s poor start to the campaign, as they failed to win any of their first six matches.
But with the defender back in the fold for their weekend clash against Crystal Palace, Everton finally secured their first victory of the season. While it would be an exaggeration to credit the entire win to Branthwaite, his return certainly helped stabilise their defence.
Reports have suggested that Liverpool view Branthwaite as a potential long-term partner for Jarell Quansah, whose own development has been impressive.
However, speculation linking the Everton man to a move across Merseyside appears premature, with journalist Fabrizio Romano weighing in on the rumours.
On The Debrief podcast, Romano played down suggestions that Liverpool have made any concrete approach for Branthwaite.
“No, to be honest, I’m told at the moment there is nothing concrete,” said Romano.
“The situation is still under control for Branthwaite and Everton. There are no negotiations or talks taking place with Liverpool.”
Romano continued: “The appreciation from Manchester United remains, but they invested big money on centre-backs. So at the moment the situation remains quiet.
“Obviously, Everton expect big clubs to arrive in the summer of 2025, so I would not be surprised if some of these big clubs will return for Branthwaite, but as of today, there are no concrete talks or negotiations.”
Regardless of the Branthwaite situation, it is clear that Liverpool will have to address their centre-back options sooner rather than later.
The Reds’ summer transfer dealings may have focused heavily on strengthening the midfield, but the defence also requires attention.
While Konaté has been outstanding and Van Dijk continues to perform at a high level, the Dutchman’s age and contract situation cannot be ignored.
Should contract talks with Van Dijk stall or fail to result in a new deal, Liverpool will be forced into a rebuild at the back.
Even if the Dutchman stays, he is now 33 and will need his game time managed carefully going forward. As for Gomez, his future at Anfield looks uncertain due to a lack of regular minutes, and he could well move on next summer.
Given these factors, Liverpool must prioritise finding a long-term centre-back pairing, and Branthwaite could be an ideal option if they can overcome the challenge of signing from Everton. Whether it’s Branthwaite or another target, 2025 will likely see Liverpool strengthen their defensive ranks.
