Everton have been dealt a fresh injury concern, with key defender Jarrad Branthwaite facing a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United after picking up a setback in training.
Branthwaite had missed the first four league games of the season, but his return last weekend coincided with Everton’s first victory of the campaign, a crucial 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
However, according to Mail Sport, the 22-year-old centre-back has now sustained a quad injury that could hinder his progress.
While the problem is not believed to be serious, it is unclear whether he will be ready for the Newcastle fixture.
Should he miss out, Branthwaite is expected to be back after the upcoming international break.
The statistics underline Branthwaite’s importance to the Toffees. Since the beginning of last season, Everton have averaged 1.4 points per game with him in the side, compared to just 0.4 points per game when he has been absent.
His impressive form last season earned him his first call-up to the England squad and attracted significant transfer interest over the summer.
Manchester United made three bids for the former Carlisle United player, all of which were rejected by Everton, who refused to be pressured into selling their prized asset.
According to Mail Sport, Liverpool are now considering a move to hijack United’s pursuit of Branthwaite, with Everton having reportedly set an asking price of £75 million for the highly-rated defender.
Branthwaite remains contracted to Everton until 2027, with the club holding an option to extend his deal for a further year. As Everton look to build on their recent victory, they will be hoping to have their star man back in action as soon as possible.
