Everton’s efforts to tie down star defender Jarrad Branthwaite to a new long-term deal have reportedly hit a stumbling block, with the player yet to be convinced, according to TBR Football.
The outlet revealed on 20 November that “fresh information” suggests the 22-year-old is aware of interest from Manchester United and has so far resisted signing terms that would make him one of Everton’s highest earners. The Red Devils’ interest appears to be playing a role in the delay.
Despite this, Everton remain firm in their stance, insisting Branthwaite will not be sold during the January transfer window. The defender is under contract until 2027, giving the Toffees significant leverage to retain their highly-rated centre-back.
Everton must secure Branthwaite’s future
Keeping Branthwaite at Goodison Park is critical for Everton as they look to build for the future.
A product of Carlisle United’s academy, the young defender has been a revelation on Merseyside, attracting attention from top clubs such as Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Liverpool.
The 22-year-old was instrumental in Everton’s battle to avoid relegation last season and earned his first England cap in June 2024 in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
While he narrowly missed out on the final squad for last summer’s European Championships, Branthwaite is widely tipped to become a key figure for the Three Lions in the years ahead.
The recent takeover of Everton by the Friedkin Group may play a pivotal role in convincing Branthwaite to stay.
The new ownership’s ambition to propel the club back into the Premier League’s upper echelons could align with the defender’s career goals.
After recovering from an injury that ruled him out of England duty during the international break, Branthwaite has returned to training this week and is expected to start in Everton’s match against Brentford on 23 November.
