Leicester City have been dealt a significant blow with winger Abdul Fatawu confirming he has undergone knee surgery following an injury sustained on international duty with Ghana.
Fatawu was forced off in the first half of Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Angola last Friday and returned to Leicester shortly afterwards.
Photographs later emerged of the 20-year-old wearing a knee brace, and now the player has taken to social media to confirm the surgery.
Details regarding the nature of the injury and Fatawu’s expected recovery timeline are yet to be disclosed. Manager Steve Cooper is expected to provide an update during his Thursday morning press conference.
However, the news of an operation for one of Leicester’s key players is a setback to the club’s ambitions this season.
Posting from his hospital bed, Fatawu shared an update with fans, writing:
“My surgery was successful and I just want to tell you that I am okay and I am feeling good after the surgery. I want to thank everyone for your best wishes.”
The young winger’s post drew messages of support from teammates including Wilfred Ndidi, Hamza Choudhury, Kasey McAteer, and Will Alves. Known as a popular figure at the club, Fatawu’s absence will undoubtedly be felt among the squad.
He added: “Good to have team-mates like this. They gave me good energy before the surgery and I really appreciate that. Love all you guys. I will be back stronger.”
The injury could force Leicester to reassess their transfer plans in January, particularly with Jordan Ayew also nursing a knee issue sustained during his time with Ghana.
Ayew’s condition, described as “significant” by the Black Stars’ medical team, compounds Leicester’s attacking woes.
