Paul Merson has hailed Matheus Cunha as the player who could single-handedly keep Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League this season.
However, the former Arsenal midfielder has also questioned the Brazilian’s consistency, suggesting he can sometimes “go missing” in crucial games.
Cunha has been one of the standout performers in the league this term, with only Erling Haaland, Bukayo Saka, Chris Wood, and Bryan Mbeumo outscoring him.
His contributions have been instrumental in Wolves’ recent turnaround. After a dismal start to the campaign, back-to-back victories against Southampton and Fulham have lifted the club out of the relegation zone for the first time this season, providing much-needed momentum heading into the winter months.
Merson: Cunha Needs to Deliver Regularly
Speaking to SportsKeeda, Merson was full of praise for Cunha’s influence but cautioned that his form can sometimes dip.
“It was a phenomenal result for Wolves last weekend, no other word to define it. Fulham are a good team, and for Wolves to go there and win 4-1 was something incredible. Wolves will not get relegated in my opinion.
“Matheus Cunha is their match-winner without a doubt. As long as he stays with them, Wolves will be safe in the race to avoid the drop from the Premier League.
“The only concern I have about Cunha is that he can sometimes not turn up in certain games. If he is in the mood, he is such a fine player. But he has to do that on a more consistent basis.”
A Crucial Catalyst for Wolves
Cunha’s ten goal contributions in 12 Premier League matches have been vital for Wolves. His late equaliser against Brighton secured a point, and he provided an assist in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. He also played a significant role in Wolves’ goals during wins over Southampton and Fulham.
Altogether, Cunha has directly influenced eight of Wolves’ 11 points this season, proving his worth on the pitch and justifying his £60,000-per-week contract.
With more consistency, the Brazilian could not only secure Wolves’ safety but also cement himself as one of the league’s top talents.
