Nottingham Forest are preparing for the January transfer window as they look to bolster their squad in pursuit of European football.
While Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi have been the primary options leading the line this season, their performances have painted a contrasting picture.
Wood has been in superb form, scoring eight goals in 12 Premier League matches. The New Zealand international has exceeded expectations, becoming a reliable talisman for Forest’s attack.
In stark contrast, Awoniyi has struggled for both minutes and impact, with just 169 Premier League minutes to his name and no goals so far.
As Forest weigh their options, one name that recently became available – Brighton’s Evan Ferguson – appears to be off the table.
Evan Ferguson Unlikely for Forest
Brighton’s highly-rated striker Evan Ferguson, valued at £60 million, has reportedly been made available for loan in January, according to The Telegraph. However, Forest are not expected to be among the clubs in contention for his services.
Speaking to Nottingham Forest News, football journalist Graeme Bailey dismissed the possibility of Ferguson heading to the City Ground.
“I don’t think Ferguson is in Forest’s thinking, but if he was they’d have to do one of those deals (Ward-Prowse or Moreno) or cancel one of those deals, which isn’t in their thinking at the minute,” Bailey explained.
“I’m not sure Brighton would want to send him there, because he won’t get in ahead of Chris Wood. I don’t see Forest being a part of the conversations really. Forest are one of the clubs who don’t need Evan Ferguson, and the reason Brighton are sending him out is to get game time.”
Does Ferguson Fit Forest’s Needs?
Ferguson, just 19, has scored only once in seven Premier League appearances this season. While his potential is undeniable, questions remain over whether he can consistently deliver at the highest level.
Considering Wood’s strong form, Ferguson would likely struggle for minutes at Forest. Additionally, the club seems reluctant to spend heavily, especially with potential summer decisions looming over the futures of Alex Moreno and James Ward-Prowse.
Ultimately, Forest’s focus may shift elsewhere as they aim to strengthen their squad without disrupting the balance established by Wood’s excellent performances.
